Welcome to Wheaton
Located about thirty miles west of Chicago, the city of Wheaton was founded between 1831-1837 following the Indian Removal Act. Warren L. Wheaton, along with his brother, claimed six hundred and forty acres in the center of the town after they arrived from Connecticut in 1837. Wheaton was first incorporated as a village on February 24, 1859, and later being incorporated as a city on April 24, 1890 with Judge Elbert Gary becoming the first mayor.
The city has greatly expanded since the 1950’s. Downtown Wheaton has seen the growth and development of many condominiums and businesses. One of the dominant landmarks in the city is the Wheaton Center, a 758 unit apartment complex in the downtown area. The six building facility includes two twenty story high rises built in 1975.
