Apex, North Carolina was incorporated in 1873 and draws its name from being known as one of the highest points on the Chatham Railroad. In its earliest decades, the town experienced slow growth. Even after experiencing a large wildfire in the early summer of 1912, which destroyed most of the downtown business district, the overall population of Apex still continued to grow.
The town would once again experience setbacks during the Depression era of the 1950’s. However, due to Apex’s close proximity to the North Carolina Research Triangle Park, the area would continue to experience additional residential development. During the 1990’s, the population of the Apex area would nearly quadruple to over twenty thousand residents. The success of the town continues into present day. In August of 2015, TIME Magazine ranked the town of Apex number one on its list of top places to live.

As mentioned previously, Apex is a suburb of the larger metropolitan area of Raleigh. This town has a great small town atmosphere, coupled with the feeling of a larger city. The downtown area of Apex has several antique specialty gifts shops, as well as several popular restaurants including the award-winning Anna’s Pizzeria. If you like to shop, stop by Beaver Creek Commons. Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lowe’s, SuperTarget, T.J. Maxx, and other stores and restaurants are located in this area. Lastly, if you enjoy or collect trains, Apex is home to the North Carolina Railroad Museum.
