Military relocations happen when you receive Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders. The travel orders authorize moving services for you, your spouse/family, and your belongings. These orders are given if your new base is more than 50 miles away from your current one, moving to your first assignment, transferring to another base, or moving because of retirement/ discharge. The process for each branch of service is similar. Here the main steps:

- Plan and pay for your move (PPM)
- Submit paperwork for reimbursement (PPM)

Types of PCS Military Moves
The government offers three options for military personnel to facilitate their home goods move: government move, personally procured move and partial move. The first is handled entirely by the government, the second is managed entirely by the military member and the third is a blend of the two.
Government Move – The Military (Department of Defense) pays an approved private business for a full service home goods move. Your Transportation Office coordinates the move for you.
Personal Procured Move (PPM) Also know as Do-IT-Yourself (DITY) - You are in control of the moving process. You can choose from self-moving services, or a moving company. DOD will reimburse you 95% of the cost of what they pay for a Government Move. You keep the difference.
Partial Move -Your move is divided between a Government Move and a PPM. Your TO will take care of its portion of the move and pay for it. You will be responsible for planning the PPM part the move and save all the weight receipts and the necessary documentation to be reimbursed.
