Moving across the country is a big step, and even larger if your cross country move involves moving your family.  Each detail must be carefully planned and considered so that your move will be a success. Depending on whether or not you decide to use professional movers or complete the move yourself, there are still important steps to consider as you plan your move.

If you are in the process of planning to move across the country, here are some helpful tips:

Choose Your Method of Moving

How you move is as important as the move itself because you want to make sure that your family’s belongings will be transported safely and securely. If you will be hiring professional movers to move your family, it is a good idea to book your move well in advance. This will enable you to avoid missing out on the moving day you need, as well as getting closed out if moving services are not available.

Consider using portable moving containers because it will provide your family with more flexibility to pack at your leisure, while still having the benefit of your belongings being transported for you. Another added bonus, portable moving containers provide more organization for your move which is ideal if you are moving a family. You can utilize the convenience of packing a container for each room which will make the unpacking process easier to sort through on the other side of your move.

If your cross country family move is going to be more of a DIY moving process, make sure that you choose a safe and secure method to move your items since you will be transporting the items yourself. Additionally, make sure you make provisions that will accommodate all of the belongings you have so that you can ensure your family’s move goes smoothly.

Take Inventory

Whether your move is conducted via a professional moving transport company or by you, it is still important to have an inventory of what you are moving since you are moving across the country. A good idea is to start making a list of each family member’s belongings so that you will have a good idea of what is being transported across the miles. While professional moves are safe and secure, it is always good to have an idea of what you have to help make your moving process easier, both before your move and after.

Pack Securely

If you are packing your family’s belongings, make sure you pack breakable items with plenty of cushioning and padding to withstand the long moving trip across the country. If your belongings are going to be packed up for you by professional movers, make sure that you reference any items you would like to transport yourself.

Securely pack all electronics, removing all batteries. Cover and protect all leather furniture, cloth furniture, as well as wooden furniture finishes. Do not move or transport any type of flammable or toxic products as this could be dangerous to your move.

Make the Move Enjoyable

Moving your family across the country may be a hard adjustment. Setting aside some time to enjoy the process will allow your family to have some light hearted moments during the move, as well as create some fun and new lasting memories. Whether you make a vacation out of the move, or you decide to take a family tour of your new location, allow your family to have some enjoyable moments to adjust to the move.
